I was excited to see you'd posted this, and my expectation more than paid off; this is wonderful! His resignation and isolation and exhaustion come across so strongly, and you've packed so many little details into these brief snapshots. This poor kid. 'Gold' is one of my favourites; 'not that he'll stay long' is the perfect punch at the end.
