Fannish50 #38: Ten - Nightwalker

Nightwalker is an amazing song. Vic really likes Ten, and I can appreciate him. The song is amazing, there's no question. Vic calls him their Thai boy, but considering most of their Thai boys are actors who also sing, that didn't help. It also didn't help that I forgot he is Thai, so.

Christmas Crafts: The Sweatering

Yesterday I made a red mini-sweater ornament using worsted weight yarn. I succeeded! It's cute! And much less fiddly than the fingering weight patterns I had tried. I found a small Christmas tree applique done in crochet, and did the tree in fingering and the star in some embroidery floss, so now I have a sweater with a Christmas tree on it. Very cute!

It is now 7:27am. I have one sweater done. Six more to go. I have one in partial progress - just needs the sleeves. This one's green and I am going to put a candy cane applique on it. The girls (3 of them) will get the red sweaters and the boys (4 of them) will get green.

I do have until late Friday to get these done, but I'm hoping to get a lot done today so that I can enjoy the next few days.

Will be editing this post with status updates!

07:31:00 AM - 07:55:00 AM (24 min) - first sleeve of first green sweater done
08:26:00 AM - 08:53:00 AM (27 min) - candy cane applique done and sewn on
08:54:00 AM - 09:15:00 AM (21 min) - second sleeve done. First green sweater finished!

10:27:00 AM - 10:55:00 AM (28 min) - Yoke of second green sweater, up to splitting for sleeves
12:14:00 PM - 01:14:00 PM (1 hour) - Body, sleeves, and finishing of second green sweater

EDIT 3:01pm: WE INTERRUPT THE SWEATERING FOR AN EMERGENCY STOCKING. See, mom had me go to the Irish import store yesterday to pick up dinner, but also said to buy myself a Crunchie bar "but don't eat it, it's for your stocking". which reminded me I haven't put out my stocking yet. Folks, I cannot find it. It's not in the usual places, or in the one unusual place I thought it might be. So me being me, I grabbed a Q hook and super bulky yarn and started making a new one. I allowed myself an hour to work on it, and I have finished the heel turn. Now: back to the sweatering.

EDIT 5:49pm: Emergency Stocking is DONE and submitted to a Nerdopolis challenge. Only took an hour and 45 minutes. Meanwhile, I've got a red sweater yoke complete. Might have time to finish it before dinner, so off I go!

Vid meme 2024–25

The vids

Lucky Strike (The Princess, Jan 2024)
Nightwalker (multi, Jan 2025)
Pom Poms (Squid Game, Feb 2025)
I Want to Destroy Something Beautiful (Squid Game, Mar 2025)
With Knives (multi, Jun 2025)
If It’s All I Got (A Bittersweet Life, Jul 2025)

Favourite vid

It’s a toss-up between I Want to Destroy Something Beautiful, and If It’s All I Got. This has nothing to do with Lee Byung-hun’s face; I was just very happy with those two vids and proud of how they turned out.

Most successful vid

Lucky Strike, which was in Festivids that year.

Vid least appreciated by the universe

If It’s All I Got. I know, I know, this is always true for movie vids, unless maybe they are part of an exchange, or maybe if there is a franchise involved. I do it to myself, though.

Most fun vid

Lucky Strike. Neither of our leads dies or horribly betrays the other! It wins by default!

Vid with the single sexiest moment

Nightwalker, except if you want me to pick a moment I am going to feel overly exposed. Not one of the obviously sexual moments, we could say :P

Hardest vid to make

I Want to Destroy Something Beautiful. Not because it was hard to make technically or anything. But I did put more conscious thought into structure and some of my technical choices than I usually would do.

Thinking some more though, Nightwalker had the biggest ‘barrier to entry’. It was straightforward once I was making it, but it involved the most source, and I also had to rewatch and finish Hannibal in order to make it. There were also a couple of points when I was making it where I was struggling, and wondering whether using Killing Eve as well would make all my problems go away – except that would have changed my central conceit, and if I opened the vid up to that there were other sources I would have had to consider as well. So that was a bit of a battle.

Most unintentionally telling vid

NO UNINTENTIONAL TELLING, ONLY INTENTIONAL.

That is, With Knives is a vid made using only shots that have blood in them from my other vids. So I guess you could say it is an intentionally telling vid made from unintentionally telling source material :P

Things I learned

I should try and acquire all my source at the same frame rate … sigh …

Things to work on

Relating to an in-progress Evangelion vid: incorporating still images in with other sources. I’ve never done it before! I don’t watch a lot of comic vids either to give me a sense of how to go about things (recs welcome).

For 2026

Finish the Evangelion vid! Or at least, make some progress so I can come back and finish it another year :P

Fandom Fifty: #44

Going early with this because of the holiday. 2018, how many (few) did I see?

SEVEN?! Okay, 3 of these were son's fault.

~ Love, Simon - I wound up unironically loving the way this played out. May have teared up a bit.
~ Solo: A Star Wars Story - Had been on the fence, fell for both Val and L3-37, GO ME FOR PICKING THE DOOMED ONES.
~ Venom - I had not kept up with comics, but I swear this version is almost like if every time The Maxx had been talking to himself, he'd been two people. I really did enjoy the film.

~ Bumblebee - LOL, I only just watched this in the past year. Twice. I really wish I had not waited but GO CHARLIE!
~ Aquaman - So I saw the reunion scene between Tom and Atlanna, and it hit my RexSoka buttons, so I watched it. Liked it a lot more than I had Wonder Woman!
~ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - OMG, so freaking awesome! I LOVE THIS FILM.

and my fave:
~ Black Panther - So this is where I fell back in love with some of the MCU again. There's not a Wakandan I don't love, even the antagonists. This made me give a damn about the BP property in ways I had not thought possible, and proves that you have to have the right creative effort leaders!

[personal profile] harmfulmyths made these three Danganronpa vids as part of [community profile] ficinabox, and they are a good time! All of them! They use anime rather than game source, and because I haven't seen the anime for the first game, I would now totally believe that Togami and Naegi do actually bang in it.

Pledges & Requirements | getyourwordsout.net

Made the (probably idiotic!) decision to sign up for Get Your Words Out again.

First year with this account, obviously, and I think it might be my sixth overall.

Pledged for 250k this year, which is two tiers higher than last year's 150k but lower than some of my more insane attempts in previous years. As usual, I suspect I'll either breeze through it with no trouble whatsoever, or crash and burn so dreadfully there'll be nothing left of me but a pile of ash and shame.

I haven't experienced the latter yet... but you know, first time for everything.

At any rate, I'm hoping -- as I've hoped before, with zero success, but hey, sixth time's the charm, right? -- that this will push me into using this space to actually Talk About My Writing, and my fannish feelings in general. It's easier in a new space, without having to worry about boring or annoying any existent followers who Did Not Sign Up For This Shit. Building a space slowly and quietly is rather freeing, in that sense.

At the very least, I'm hoping this will keep me motivated to at least try -- as I've also done before, with greater-than-zero success -- to sustain some sort of monthly check-in post or something.

Maybe. Hopefully. Maybe?

12 Week Year WAM Week 13

Weekly Score: 85.7 (30/35)

Goal 1: Do Physical Therapy Exercises. 100% (16/16)

Review: I caught the plague my son brought home from school, and gave myself the second half of the week off. I didn't even try to do any stretches or anything, I just felt like crap. No runny nose or fever to show, but my throat was scratchy and I just felt horrible. Didn't want to work through it. Will pick up again on Monday.

Goal 2: Take Care of Myself. 78% (14/18)

Review: This was better, but not as good as it could have been. Laying around all day doesn't actually give me any incentive to actually sleep on time, although I did manage more than usual. I did end up not eating definite meals on a couple of days, but for the most part, I feel like I did well. I didn't end up doing some of the things I wanted to, but I forgave myself for that, too.

Goal 3: Finish GYWO Build-a-Bingo and 100Ships. 0%

Review: I didn't write on my final story I wanted to, but I spent some time thinking about it, and I did start it. Sadly, didn't get much written - didn't get to writing group because although I was mostly recovered, I didn't want to risk it and get my fellow authors sick.

Intentions for the future: I intend to morph my physical therapy into actual workouts - not sure how, but that's the plan - and I will have someone to work out with starting mid January. That gives me time to get things done. I will continue to work on taking care of myself, although that gets harder when I'm not tracking it like this. And I will keep trying to write - I have 51 short fics yet to write for the 100ships challenge.
