be my mirror, my sword and shield (Harold Finch, Person of Interest)

Character: Harold Finch
Fandom: Person of Interest (TV)
Relationship: Harold Finch/John Reese
Theme set: Gamma
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Spoilers for the entire show, including 5x13 (the last episode)
Notes: Title from Coldplay's Viva La Vida

1 - Snow

While the weather buries the city, Harold hibernates indoors, kept warm by steaming cups of tea and a heavy Malinois who sleeps across his feet.

2 - Child

"Be nice to have a child," John murmurs, as Leila's grandparents carry her inside; Harold wishes he could give him that, but he would have to give him up, first.

3 - Brick

Harold has a small collection of 'brick' phones, some he personally used in the '80s, and others he acquired later.

4 - Judgment

Harold reviews the footage, sees himself leaving the diner, John's gaze following him until he checks the empty menu and smothers a smile...Harold's chest flutters, knowing he made John truly happy with his simple act of trust.

5 - Powder

When John first comes in smelling of gunpowder, it's all Harold can do not to sneeze...he learns to appreciate it, after a few years, by which time it has become indistinguishable from John's natural scent.

6 - Grim

John turns to him, a grim slant to his lips, and Harold knows he's probably going to have to run to get out of this situation alive.

7 - Trap

Harold has snuck into so many properties by now that he's getting overconfident...he doesn't see the pit trap in their number's backyard until he's caught in it - he has to call Mr. Reese to come rescue him.

8 - Star

Many of Harold's sweetest dreams have started to feature naked John in a starring role - such eroticisim certainly makes a pleasant change from his previous nightmares littered with blood and death.

9 - Possession

Harold only regrets giving John access to God Mode once; when he sees John using it, he doesn't like the idea of his Machine treating John like a possession, even though it gets him home safe.

10 - Bandage

It's possible Harold has bought too many bandages, they barely fit in the two good-sized drawers he allocated for medical supplies.

11 - Pearl

The pearl handle pistol cufflinks make an impractical gift - they would make John too recognizable if he wore them while working; Harold buys them anyway and leaves them on his pillow for John to find.

12 - Glass

The glass board in the library does not have adequate stability for being kissed against.

13 - Classified

John's CIA file, with most of the redactions removed...Harold memorizes and then burns the only remaining copy.

14 - Buttons

Harold lies back and lets John carefully undo all his buttons and tuck him into bed.

15 - Closet

Harold reminds himself shakily that he did ask John to move his arsenal, he just didn't imagine it would all end up affixed to the walls of this one small walk-in closet.

16 - Ash

After Owen Island, Harold has nightmares about all those disintegrated bodies he found: their teeth and bones seek him out and try to scrape off his flesh for them to inhabit instead.

17 - Definition

The footage is extraordinarily high definition...Harold finds himself transfixed as he watches John move, so graceful and decisive as he knocks down all of his enemies.

18 - Staircase

John's legs are so long - this much becomes obvious as Harold watches him descend the staircase, dressed to the nines in the suit Harold picked out for him.

19 - Nail

"Gonna nail these guys," John says breathlessly, hefting an actual nail gun onto his shoulder as he hurries out; Harold rolls his eyes skyward and hopes for the patience to endure John's jokes.

20 - Prey

The incident with Trask underlines how much Harold hates being chased; there's a reason he's become so good at losing anyone who tries to tail him.

21 - Backwards

It happens more often than he would like - the moment they realize they have approached the case backwards, and trusted the wrong people, endangering everything.

22 - Trouble

Trouble finds them, wherever they go: even while on vacation John can't help intervening when he sees another couple arguing.

23 - Little

"You're so little," Harold murmurs, his fingertip stroking the kitten's outstretched paw.

24 - Collar

He's so proud of the way John looks with Harold's thumbs tucked either side of his neck, testing the give on the snug leather band.

25 - Circle

His own words about Pi echo back to him later, after class... the name of your latest crush, and Harold smiles to himself, because John's name is definitely in that string of numbers, somewhere.

26 - Hands

Harold sits opposite him at the diner table and simply holds John's hands in his.

27 - Freedom

To ensure his freedom, Harold has had to keep secrets all his life.

28 - Last

Harold is quite proud of his ability to last, especially when John rides him, slow and thorough.

29 - Scab

Harold tuts as he uncovers the mostly healed patch of rough skin - John allowing his wounds to scab over instead of letting him treat them makes Harold very sad every time.

30 - Crown

The crown of John's head has a bald spot, only visible up close - Harold kisses it while lying in bed behind him, hopelessly enamored with everything about him.

31 - Time

He tries not to think about living on borrowed time, but it is unavoidable the more close calls they have.

32 - Rice

Lionel asks him whether leaving his phone in a bag of rice really will dry it out; Harold sighs and suggests he test it for himself - sometimes he tires of being tech support.

33 - Worn

With all the legwork he does, the soles of John's shoes occasionally get worn out - Harold takes note and orders replacements long before they can hinder John's performance.

34 - Paint

Harold regrets turning down John's offer to paint their first shared apartment - yes, he has professionals he pays for that, but it might have been more romantic to live somewhere touched by John's own hands; to look at the wall and have lasting proof of John's existence in every square inch.

35 - Ache

A perfectly productive day is abruptly halted by a headache so painful that Harold has to cease looking at screens; amidst his disappointment, it is a comfort to go lie down and let John stroke his hair.

36 - Cherry

This cherry popsicle John brought him is quite delicious - Harold decides he's going to continue to fellate it thoroughly, since he's enjoying watching John fight the urge to squirm in his seat, even more than the taste.

37 - Library

Once he's living underground, Harold misses that old building, with its thick walls and shafts of sunlight, and countless books everywhere one looked.

38 - Win

John actually beats him at chess, fair and square - his smug grin matters more than personal pride, because making John happy means Harold is winning, too.

39 - Loss

In his more maudlin moments, Harold recognizes that finding John means he could lose him the way he lost Grace and Nathan...but John is so grateful to be found, Harold tries not to let his grief come between them.

40 - Fold

Harold appreciates that John is equally fussy about folding his clothes before bed - thankfully John's cavalier attitude toward his own safety does not extend to the way he treats his shirts.

41 - Music

Harold is acutely embarrassed about having to sing at the Turners' wedding to maintain his cover, but it soothes his ego slightly that John looks so moved to hear him.

42 - Bell

"We'll have to put a bell on you," Harold says, when John manages to sneak up on him; John tugs at his collar and grins.

43 - Sleep

Harold's insomnia is greatly reduced on the nights when John joins him - the quiet encouragement to feel instead of think enables Harold to notice that he feels safe and warm, which is vastly more conducive to getting some rest than his otherwise habitual planning for every conceivable disaster.

44 - Contact

Harold lives in his mind so much that physical contact is kind of an afterthought, but not for John - his partner is constantly reaching out, offering stability, comfort, protection.

45 - Electricity

Harold accidentally shocks John when he gives him the briefcase, his hand still staticky from the ferocious charge he took while saving the Machine.

46 - Milk

He finds a discarded bottle of Leila's in a drawer at the library a few weeks after handing her back to her grandparents - Harold holds it wistfully for a while before making himself get rid of it.

47 - Wild

Harold has never kept birds as pets, no matter how much he admires them, he knows the most freedom they can have is when they are in the wild.

48 - Expectation

He expects John to be lethal and suspicious and angry, and he has definitely been all of those things...but the warmth, care and thoughtfulness John brings to his life are all the more precious for being unexpected.

49 - Mechanism

Sometime he dreams of the Machine as a three-dimensional being, such space does it take up in his life and his brain; building her a physical form would have pros and cons.

50 - Finale

As a young man, Harold had given the world the internet by cracking open ARPANET and forcing them to share, so it's ironic that he's crashing it now while ICE-9 runs it course, but any guilt he might have felt about that is fleeting; if the world is going to take John from him, the least it can do is cope with being offline for a few days.
